What is Freshflex™
Freshflex™ is an innovative menu system, built on the belief that fresh, flavourful, nutritious meals are an important part of everyone’s healthcare journey.
Within the program, patients choose from a 7-21 day menu that includes choices for starters, entrees and desserts, with more than 100 restaurant quality dishes to explore. Menu changes with the seasons, using locally-sourced ingredients where possible, and refined based on food trends, insights and patient feedback.
The key to the program is the equipment needed to safely and efficiently cook, store and deliver meals to patients at the hospital. The total cost of the project is $160,000.
- Flexibility – people have many dietary restrictions, allergies or nutritional requirements, and Freshflex™ provides the team with the equipment and ability to customize meals to accommodate differing diets and preferences.
- Nutrition for Patients – while the current food served at GBGH is nutritious, a patient’s lack of interest in eating can affect their overall health. Because Freshflex™ meals have excellent presentation, and variety, patients are more likely to eat them, improving their nutritional status.
- Length of Hospital Stay – Nutrition plays a key role in a patient’s journey back to health, and providing them with meals they want to eat helps to ensure their recovery as soon as possible, often meaning a shorter hospital stay.
- Equipment – The specialized self-cooking oven includes functions for roasting, steaming, baking, so that different parts of the meal can be prepared in different ways. This also allows meals to be prepared on demand for new admissions to the hospital.
